Just got back from NC and and looking for words to describe the trip. Mark G., Sal Bananas, Erwin Jr, and myself put 3 giants to the boat with Sal’s fish going around 85″! Pulling naked Ballyhoos was the hot ticket early with visible BFT swimming just below the surface. Jr tossed a popper during Mark’s battle with his Giant and it did not take long before the fish crushed and I mean crushed his hard bait. I was able to get it on video which really shows what a Tuna surface strike is like. The Stella 20,000 was loaded with 80 braid with a 25′ of 80 flourocarbon. We did get the fish to submit and estimated the weight at 175lb. Jr brought the last giant to the boat in the afternoon which was another beauty at 80″. A day to remember for sure with a nice 72″ fish killed. I hope this a a sign for things to come this year!!
I will be offering plug fishing for bass, “PENCIL POPPERS” are one of the most productive top water lures there is for Stripe Bass. This year I will offer these types of trips for any evening starting in May and lasting until early July. They will be limited to up to 4 clients and strictly tossing these hard baits. I will supply the Pencil Poppers. If interested, give me a call and I will supply you with more info and the price.
Jr and I fished with Captain Mark Houghtaling on the “Magic Fingers” sailing out of South Miami. Anthony Penepede flew down for the first 2 trips and was not disappointed. The first day conditions were super for kite fishing and we put our limit of Kings in the boat along with Sails, Blackfin Tuna, Cuda, Bonita, Mahi. Fishing was hot all day and watching the bait get smashed on the surfaced is exciting as it gets. On Tuesday, we elected to try the jigging. After last years action we could not wait to try it again. The jig action was not a fast and furious as last year but very good to day the least. The fish were bigger and I think they are just as strong if not stronger then our Bluefins of similar size. We jigged Blackfin Tuna, Bonita, Cuda, Kingfish. Fishing this time of year down in south Florida is like a dream. Dark Blue water, warm air temps, and great fishing. We have been fishing with Mark for close to 20 years and it is the type of trip that you just don’t want to end. 1 Trip got blown out because of the wind and 2 more trips the next week provided us with the same smorgasbord as the previous weeks fishing. With super kite fishing, we wanted to get in as much as we could being it will take another year to get back here. If anyone is planning on going to Florida and wants to fish, Magic Fingers is the boat for you. I can get you the information if you need. (miamifloridafishing.com/captainsthoughts) (Magicfingers@aol.com) We fished with Avet reels and Stingo jigs along with some Shimano Butterfly. The Avet reels performed flawlessly and the smooth drags were awesome. The Sails really put the equipment to the test and a huge Kingfish really proved how good these reels are. With the bass hitting the beach everyday now it will not be to long before the Scales n Tales is back in the water. We are ready and waiting. Have a good, safe season………..
