Florida 2014 — Red Hot Sail fishing

We could not have written a better script. A strong NE after a week of very calm weather turned the sailfish on for us. Bait was easy and after a short ride to the edge, various baits, Threadfins, Bluerunners, Pilchards were sent out under the kite and on flatlines. WE were on board Capt Alex Castellanos’s 31 CC Contender, a very nice ride indeed!!! Capt Alex who came highly recommended from Capt Mark of the” Magic Fingers”, surpassed my expectations, I enjoyed every minute. It did not take long, (15 mins) before the first sail hit. George, a virgin when it comes to this type of fishing did a great job fighting his first sailfishand before long we released the first of many that chewed on our baits throughout the day. Twice we had 3 on at a time!! A huge King Fish  (50 Lbs) made it into the Kingfish hotel also. Final tally was 6 Sails relased, out of 11 hooked, a King fish and some small Spanish Mackeral. The seas were sporty, but the  Contender Hull kept the water out and provided a very solid platform for us. I have been fishing south Florida for the past 25 years and cannot remember a hotter bite for these great fighting fish!! Anyone interested in this type of fishing, please give me a call and I will get you Capt’s Alex info to you. He certainley provided us with a great trip!!!    We also did a trip to Marco Island, My buddy Mark, Jr and myself took a ride fished with my buddy “DOC” Little. FIrst we tried for some tarpon, then got some bait and moved of shore where I got a nice Goliath grouper, and then bounced around swimming baits in fishy looking areas. Mark, who kept his not skunked record alive, hooked and landed a Bluefish!! Jr got a small Snook and we enjoyed a great day with Doc in Marco Island. At the end of the south Florida trip we headed to the northwest part of the state to fish with my buddy Capt Mark on the new “Magic Fingers”. Jr and myself along with Mark and his wife Nancy got into super Redsnapper fishing, every bait gets bit, on a very nice day in the gulf. Day number 2 found us fishing the shallow waters of the bay looking for Reds. Erwin jr got a real good Redfish anlong with a summer flounder that bit his hard bait!! A very nice change of pace. After fishing with Capt Mark for 25 years in the deep blue waters of south Florida, it was really nice to do something new to all of us. A great trip down south this year, great friends, very good fishing and did I mention cold beer???? now its time to bend some rods on the Scales n Tales, 1st trip April 15!!!
